Swordfish have a long nose that most people call the sword. It is actually a slender bill that looks like a sword. This is the reason this fish is called the swordfish. The sword is used to slash at prey and to defend itself. Swordfish NEVER (except accidentally) use their sword to spear prey. They do, however, stab predators. The sword has many other uses, including slicing the water and making it easier for a swordfish to swim. This allows the fish to go at top speed, which is about 65 miles per hour. When swordfish are harpooned, they swim so fast they have been known to stick their sword into the sand at the bottom of the sea. They have also been known to punch a hole in the hull of small boats.
