A swordfish has a unique body shape. Their body is a slender torpedo shape. It has a long sail-shaped fin that is called the dorsal fin. Their caudal fin is a crescent-shaped tail. The body smoothly connects with the sword (next page). Their body is colored black to brown and blue, with a darker back and lighter belly. Fish looking up see light, right? Well, the lighter belly is so that the color of the higher water blends in with the light belly of the fish. It is the opposite for looking down and the darker back. The tail is colored the same way, except it is more commonly colored brown. A swordfish can grow up to 14 feet long. That's longer than two mattresses end to end! Swordfish can weigh up to 1400 pounds. Female swordfish are larger than the males.
